Spotting scopes give you the reach that binoculars can’t, but they usually come with a tripod, a head and a lot of setting up. The Swarovski ST Balance 14-35x50 takes a different approach. It’s a straight-view spotting scope with built-in image stabilisation, so you can use it handheld and still get a steady, detailed view.
We took the ST Balance out to the Budleigh Salterton estuary to see how it copes with real birdwatching. This post covers what we found, along with the full specification from Swarovski Optik.
The ST Balance is part of Swarovski Optik’s AT/ST Balance family of stabilised spotting scopes. The “ST” stands for straight view, meaning you look straight through the eyepiece towards your subject. This makes it quick and natural to aim and to find a bird. The family’s angled model is the AT Balance 18-45x65, which is a larger scope with more magnification.
The ST Balance 14-35x50 is the lighter, more compact option. It’s built for people who move around, scan quickly and want to avoid carrying a tripod all day.

The headline feature is the shake-free image stabilisation. At 35x, even a tiny hand tremor can blur the view and make a distant bird impossible to identify. The stabilisation system removes that movement, so you can see fine detail without a tripod.
It also needs no setup. Press the single button and the image locks in about two seconds after you raise the scope. That makes it quick to use when a bird appears, and it’s less tiring on the eyes and arms over a long session.
The 14–35x zoom covers everything from wide landscape scanning to close-up detail:
The 57–71° apparent field of view makes the image feel open and comfortable, and the 20 mm eye relief suits glasses wearers. The scope also focuses as close as 3.4 m, so it’s useful for nearby subjects as well as distant ones.
Brightness: The 50 mm objective lens and 88% light transmission give bright, crisp images. We found it performed well at dawn, dusk and over dark tree lines and water, which are the conditions where birds are most active. As with any zoom scope, the image is brightest at 14x, where the exit pupil is 3.6 mm. It narrows to 1.4 mm at 35x, so use the lower magnifications when the light is poor.
Weight: At 1,300 g and 268 mm long, it’s light enough to hold and carry for a full day’s birdwatching.
Battery: The rechargeable battery powers the stabilisation for approximately 12 hours, which covers a full day in the field. It charges via the USB-C cable supplied, and a separate battery charger is also included.
We used the ST Balance at Otter Estuary in Budleigh Salterton. It’s a great place to test a spotting scope, with a wide range of distances, changing light and lots of movement.
We saw herons, spotted redshanks, cormorants and egrets. The stabilisation made it easy to follow birds, whether they were standing in a group or taking off suddenly, and the view stayed steady at the higher magnifications.

The ST Balance is designed to be used handheld, and that’s how most people will use it. For long sessions, such as scanning a big flock, you can mount it on a tripod. An adapter plate is included in the box, and the stabilisation can still help with the view on a tripod. Swarovski reviews note that holding any scope up for a long time can become tiring, so having a tripod for longer sessions is sensible.
If you’d like to photograph what you see, Swarovski’s recommended accessories include:
