South West Optics is heading to the Otter Estuary Nature Reserve for Wetland Weekender 2026, bringing along a wide selection of optics for birdwatchers, wildlife enthusiasts and anyone looking to get closer to nature.
Taking place on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th October 2026, the event provides the perfect opportunity to try binoculars, spotting scopes and wildlife observation technology in a genuine field environment.
Ahead of the event, we took the Opticron MM4 62 GA spotting scope down to the Otter Estuary to put it through its paces and take a closer look at what visitors can expect from the Wetland Weekender.
Wetland Weekender is a celebration of the Otter Estuary and the start of the autumn migration season, with two days of activities designed to help visitors explore and connect with the local environment.
As part of the weekend, South West Optics will be hosting an optics demonstration from 10am to 4pm on both Friday and Saturday.
Visitors will be able to get hands-on with equipment from leading optics manufacturers including Opticron, Swarovski, Kowa, Leica, Vortex and HIKMICRO.
The varied landscape surrounding the Otter Estuary makes it an excellent place to compare optics. Instead of looking across a showroom, you can test equipment across tidal mudflats, reedbeds, woodland and open water while looking for the wildlife that calls the estuary home.
Choosing between binoculars and spotting scopes can be difficult when you're relying entirely on specifications.
At the Wetland Weekender, you'll be able to compare different models in real-world conditions and see the differences for yourself.
You can assess factors such as image brightness, field of view, focusing, ergonomics and magnification while actually observing wildlife. The South West Optics team will also be on hand to answer questions and help explain the differences between the equipment available.
One of the spotting scopes we'll be demonstrating is the Opticron MM4 62 GA featured in our video.
The MM4 62 GA is part of Opticron's compact spotting scope range and has been designed to provide strong optical performance without becoming cumbersome to carry in the field.
Its 62mm objective lens provides increased light-gathering capability while the polycarbonate construction keeps the overall weight to approximately 1,010g.
Paired with Opticron's HR3 eyepiece, the scope provides a useful 16-48x magnification range with 16-20mm of eye relief.
For birdwatchers spending a full day outdoors, that combination of optical performance, relatively low weight and compact dimensions makes the MM4 particularly interesting.
Moving from a 60mm to a 62mm objective might sound like a relatively small change, but it results in approximately 6.78% more objective lens surface area.
That additional area allows the scope to gather more light, helping produce a brighter image when conditions become more challenging.
This can be particularly useful for wildlife observation around dawn, dusk and overcast conditions, when available light can quickly become limited.
At somewhere like the Otter Estuary, where wildlife can be spread across large areas of mudflat and water, maintaining a bright and detailed image can make a noticeable difference.
Another useful feature of the MM4 62 GA is its dual-focus system.
The coarse adjustment lets you quickly bring a subject into focus before using the fine adjustment to make smaller corrections. This makes it easier to refine the image without making large movements that can disturb your view.
The focusing controls are positioned directly on the scope body, helping reduce unnecessary movement while you're observing distant wildlife.
The scope also features a rotating centre barrel, allowing its position to be adjusted while mounted to a tripod.
This can be particularly useful when several people are sharing the same spotting scope, as the eyepiece can be repositioned to make viewing more comfortable without having to completely reset the tripod.
It's also useful when spending longer periods observing, sketching or recording wildlife from a hide.

The optics demonstration is only one part of what makes the weekend worth visiting.
The Otter Estuary Nature Reserve provides a mixture of tidal mudflats, reedbeds and woodland that supports a wide variety of wildlife.
During our visit for the video, juvenile herons provided an excellent opportunity to test the Opticron MM4. The area can also provide sightings of species including kingfishers, curlews and spotted redshanks, alongside mammals such as otters and bats.
There have even been recent sightings of a white-tailed eagle in the wider area, showing just how interesting this part of Devon can be for wildlife watchers.
Of course, wildlife doesn't work to a timetable, so there's no guarantee what will make an appearance during the weekend!

Visitors travelling by car are asked to use South Farm Road Car Park to help minimise traffic around the estuary. Winter parking charges apply at £2 for the day, with revenue helping support the ongoing care of the Otter Estuary.
Dogs are welcome but must be kept on leads, and sturdy footwear and clothing suitable for the weather are recommended.
Please also be aware that there are no toilet or concession facilities on site. The nearest facilities are at Budleigh beach and Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club.
