The first number is magnification: 8x makes a bird look eight times closer. The second is the lens diameter in mm, which controls brightness. Bigger lenses give brighter views in dull light but weigh more.
Full-size (42mm+) gives the brightest views. Midsize (30-34mm) is lighter for all-day carrying. Compact (20-28mm) fits in a pocket, ideal for travel.
