Francesco Gola's In-Depth Review of the Leofoto LG-324C with LH-40R Ball Head Tripod
We are excited to share with you this brilliant review from our talented ambassador, Francesco Gola. In this review, Francesco gives an in-depth review on the Leofoto LG-324C Tripod with LH-40R Ball Head making it a great read for any photographer, whether you are a professional or just starting out.
Francesco has a unique way of 'revealing the relationship between the outside world of nature and the inside world of dreams, thoughts, emotions, desires and wishes', making his imagery captivating to the viewer, and we here at South West Optics just can't get enough of them.
Here's what Francesco has to say:I firmly believe that for a landscape photographer, a good tripod is as essential as it is, unfortunately, underrated. I, too, am always on the lookout for new products that can assist me during shooting sessions, with particular attention to those designed specifically for lovers of marine environments.
For this reason, I want to share my experience with the Leofoto LG324C paired with the LH-40R head (which I managed to get in record time thanks to the excellent service from SW Optics) —a set that promises excellent performance even in the harshest conditions.
Design and Build Quality
Right out of the box, the Leofoto LG-324C immediately stands out for its modern design and attention to detail. I opted for the model with a matte black finish, and I must admit, it’s the most aesthetically pleasing tripod I’ve ever owned. But beauty alone won’t capture sharp images, which is why this tripod is crafted from 10-layer carbon fibre, promising an impeccable balance of lightness and strength. The leg sections feature twist-lock mechanisms, enabling smooth and quick height adjustments.
One distinctive feature that caught my attention and strongly influenced my choice is the corrosion resistance of the materials used. This is crucial for photographers like me who love shooting near the sea, where exposure to saltwater can quickly damage equipment. Additionally, the tripod legs are equipped with special seals that prevent water and sand from infiltrating, safeguarding both the legs and the locking system, ultimately extending the tripod’s lifespan.
Technical Features
For detail enthusiasts, here are some technical specifications of the Leofoto LG-324C:
- Tripod Weight: Approximately 1.5 kg
- Number of Leg Sections: 4, allowing for excellent extension and compactness when folded.
- Leg Section Diameters: 32 mm, 28 mm, 25 mm, and 22 mm, ensuring stability and vibration reduction.
- Maximum Height Without Centre Column: 135 cm, ideal for most shooting situations.
- Maximum Height With Centre Column: 160 cm, providing extra flexibility for framing.
- Minimum Height: 9 cm, perfect for ground-level shots or macro photography.
The LH-40R ball head adds about 500 grams to the total weight, bringing the set to approximately 2 kg. Despite this, the tripod remains highly portable, and for me, it doesn’t feel excessively heavy during photography outings.
Performance in Marine Environments
The marine environment is undoubtedly a challenging setting for a tripod: strong winds, unstable terrain, and constant humidity. The Leofoto LG-324C performed admirably in these conditions. Its stability is remarkable, allowing for long exposures without worrying about unwanted vibrations.
Another strong point is the interchangeable feet. The package includes both standard rubber feet and spiked feet, enabling adaptation to various surfaces, from slippery rocks to soft sand. Unfortunately, the set does not include long spiked feet with removable rubber covers, which I consider the best option. Thankfully, these are available as separately purchasable accessories.
Configurability and Accessories
The tripod comes without the centre column pre-installed, but it is included in the package and can be found in one of the pockets of the provided carrying bag (also included). Personally, I prefer to keep it mounted, as I am quite tall (1.95 m), and it can be useful for certain compositions that require extra height.
However, it’s worth noting that the tripod can also be used without the centre column, making it even lighter and allowing for near-ground-level compositions (something I personally never do). As with the interchangeable feet, I’m quite pleased with the configurability here as well, enabling the tripod to adapt to the specific needs of every photographer.
Ball Head Control and Precision
The LH-40R ball head is a perfect complement to the tripod, not only in design but also in functionality. With smooth, jerk-free movement, it offers precise control over framing. An essential feature for me is the friction adjustment system: it allows you to set the residual resistance once the ball is unlocked, enabling precise composition adjustments without leaving the camera (and in my case, precious filters) unsupported, reducing the risk of damage.
The load capacity of the head is more than sufficient to handle heavy equipment, including telephoto lenses, while maintaining impeccable stability. I tested it with a Fujifilm GFX 100s paired with a Fujifilm GF 20-35mm f/4 R WR lens—a decidedly heavy setup—and the head consistently performed flawlessly.
I’m still undecided whether to use this head or stick with my Manfrotto XPRO, as I’m more accustomed to Manfrotto’s attachment system than Arca-Swiss (after nearly 20 years, it’s hard to break certain habits!). However, if I didn’t already own the Manfrotto head, I’d have no hesitation in choosing the Leofoto LH-40R.
Portability, Ergonomics, and Protection
Despite its sturdy construction, the Leofoto LG-324C is surprisingly lightweight: carrying it on my shoulders for a few kilometres along the coast has never felt like a burden or inconvenience. For me, it strikes an excellent balance, as a lighter tripod would necessarily be less stable. When folded, it’s very compact, and with the head removed, it easily fits into a carry-on suitcase approved by low-cost airlines.
The twist-lock leg locking system is also well-designed. The ergonomics are excellent, as the specific design and rubberized coating make it easy and secure to operate the locks, whether barehanded or with gloves. I admit, I would have appreciated foam coverings on the legs, as I’ve found them useful in the past for handling the tripod with bare hands in very cold temperatures or for drying wet hands (always thinking about marine photography scenarios).
As previously mentioned, the twist-lock mechanism incorporates a special sealing system between each leg section, effectively blocking water and sand when retracting the legs. This is an excellent feature, as it prevents the legs from getting scratched and stops saltwater from seeping in and accumulating within the legs or locking system, which could compromise functionality and reliability over time.
There’s still a lot of time and adventures ahead for me to fully explore the potential of the Leofoto LG-324C with the LH-40R head, but so far, after testing it in various situations, I can confidently say that it’s an excellent investment for anyone seeking a tripod that balances stability and lightness.
When fully extended with the head mounted, it comfortably exceeds 1.5 metres, making it perfect even for tall individuals like me. Yet, when folded, it’s compact enough to fit inside a carry-on trolley.
The inclusion of special seals to prevent water infiltration—a much-dreaded issue—makes a significant difference in humid and salty environments, positioning it as an excellent choice for photographers like me who shoot in marine settings. Additionally, the ability to customize the tripod with interchangeable feet and the removable centre column adds versatility that can cater to any photographer’s needs.
If you’re looking for a reliable companion for your photographic adventures, the Leofoto LG-324C with the LH-40R head could be a winning choice.
