How to Adjust your Binoculars Dioptre - South West Optics

Dioptre Adjustment - How to get the best from your Binoculars!

In this blog, we will be looking at how you can get the best out of your binoculars!

One of the main reasons people have some issues with their binoculars is because they haven’t adjusted their dioptre correctly. In this blog, we are going to talk you through the best way to correct this, using the wonderful Russell's expert knowledge to talk you through it!

If you are just starting on your binocular journey, this little tip will be a game-changer when it comes to the performance of your binoculars, though it may even help a few of you binocular veterans out there as well.

The handy tip.

So what is this handy tip you ask? Well if you keep reading you’ll find a step-by-step guide on how Russell gets the most out of binoculars with a simple Dioptre adjustment.

Left Eye Focus: When you come to do your adjustment for your main image, focus with your left eye first, by simply keeping the right objective lens covered and leave your left eye objective cover off. Make your main central focus adjustment for your left eye as you would normally, but by keeping your right eye open, rather than squinting or changing the shape of your face or altering the amount of light that's getting into your left eye. This way you will be sure you're going to get an optimal and natural light read on your retina in your left eye.

Right Eye Focus: Simply repeat and swap over the process. Cover the left eye objective lens and do your dioptre adjustment for your right eye. But again, cover the left objective lens this time and just look through while making your dioptre adjustment on your right eye, keeping your left eye open and not squinting. Be sure to focus on the same target as before. Good target images are text or signs, particularly black-on-white text from about 50 yards or so, as this offers good contrast for a resoling image ‘read’.

Then once you've got your dioptre adjustment, focus as you would normally do so with the centre focus only, and you'll find you'll have tack-sharp quality images every time with your favourite pair of binoculars. Keep reading for some handy examples of targets that make a great reference for setting up your Binos and then practicing focus adjustment.

Nature Watching (Bird Watching):

Set up a target like a tree or bird feeder. Choose a tree with birds or animals nearby, and adjust your binoculars to focus on the tree at a distance. This will help you get used to adjusting focus and zoom when observing moving objects

Landscapes and Scenery:

Use a distant mountain or a building as your target. Start by scanning across the landscape, adjusting the focus, and trying to identify different features. This practice will help you with stability and maintain clarity at various distances
